In a move likely to herald the coming convergence of cellphones and digital cameras, Sony-Ericsson today announced that the K800i, the latest version of SE's wildly successful K-series phones, will bear Sony's highly regarded Cyber-shot digital camera branding.
The handset features a 3.2 megapixel camera with Xenon flash backed by a 2.0" QVGA (320x240) LCD screen and 64 MB internal memory. Expansion is via SE's new
MemoryStick Micro card and there is a secondary forward-facing VGA (0.3 megapixel) camera for video calling. Other features include Bluetooth, 3G data, and music playback. Expect this model in stores in Q2 2006.
Looks good, except for the stupid MemoryStick Micro card. If SE are planning on implementing this card on all of their new phones it seems inevitable that they will alienate a significant portion of their loyal customers. Most of us already hold a grudge about being forced to buy pricey MemorySticks instead of less expensive and higher capacity SD cards.
