Motorola ROKR E2 - new and improved iTunes phone

Motorola ROKR E2?According to unsubstantiated reports, Motorola have revealed brief details and a photo of the successor to the ROKR iTunes phones, the ROKR E2. Unlike it's candybar form-factor predecessor the new phone features Moto's rounded bar-of-soap PEBL design. The low quality photo shows a central trackball reminiscent of Apple's controversial Mighty Mouse, and the phone supposedly supports the 3G UTMS high speed network, USB2, and comes with a Bluetooth stereo headset.

However, this at least partially contradicts a recent article in BusinessWeek, which said "Expect a phone with a 1 megapixel camera, a 3.5 millimeter earphone jack (same as the iPod uses), and enough storage capacity to hold 1,000 songs -- all capabilities Motorola has confirmed. The current phone's basic design will be replaced by a sleek new look, which sources close to the company say will be an elegant slider format." The photo to the left is clearly not a slider phone, so it is difficult to tell who's making the mistake here. We here at Cameraphone Focus like pictures, so we're choosing to believe AppleInsider despite the resemblance of the photo to a botched Photoshop job.

Leaving aside the form-factor question, the biggest news here is the vastly improved song capacity. The original ROKR could store a pathetic 100 songs. If this new ROKR truly does boast a 1,000 song storage capacity (using the ROKR's most-efficient AAC+ format) that would translate to an internal memory capacity of about 2.5GB. We're betting on a handset with 512MB of internal memory which accepts a 2GB expansion card.
